On 21 July 2023, the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), together withMechanical Engineering Computer Aided Design (MECAD) and Product Development Technology Station (PDTS), co-hosted the 2023 Industry Indaba under the theme: Shaping the Future of Engineering and Manufacturing in the Free State. The main goal was to provide an excellent networking opportunity for individuals interested in the sector by connecting them with industry professionals, entrepreneurs, and like-minded students.
This also serves as a platform for exchanging ideas, forming strategic collaborations, and exploring new paths for growth and innovation within the Free State technical scene. This transformative event included a tour of the CUT Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM) and PDTS.
The PDTS focuses on product design, prototyping, and short-run production, utilising engineering expertise from the Central University of Technology and specialised prototyping equipment from CRPM. The PDTS also aims to provide students with skill development during their experiential training.
While MECAD Systems specialises in the distribution of Computer Aided Engineering technologies in Sub-Saharan Africa. The area also provides solutions to customers in areas ranging from mechanical engineering, structural engineering, and materials handling consumer design.
"Many technologies we see here at CUT represent our aspirations to become a leading University of Technology in Africa, and our students and staff are the backbone of these innovations. Moreover, our students always crave an opportunity to do something meaningful with their love for technology in order to support the university's ambition of becoming an African leader. This indaba is part of many university projects that align with our journey to reach that dream," said Prof. Alfred Ngowi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research Innovation and Engagement.
Mr Braam Rossouw, the MEDAC Territory Manager, highlighted that MECAD plans to carry the PDTS vision as well as evolve what they have within the industry. “As MECAD, we also aim to help in providing tools, collaborate and give more partnerships because already there are a lot of capabilities where PDTS can contribute immensely."
The 2023 Industry Indaba serves as a catalyst for industry and academic partnerships. It imagines a world in which engineers can thrive and develop in product design and manufacturing. Individuals gained the opportunity to learn about engineering and developments from industry professionals and academics.
