It was a late start on a sunny Saturday morning at the Kopano Intra-Varsity Cup 2016 hosted by Welkom Campus, as the fixture was rescheduled due to the late arrival of Bloemfontein players. On arrival, the sports men and women looked highly motivated and enthusiastic about the day. There was no further waste of time on the start of games as different sporting codes dressed in their beautiful colours and headed for their different sporting fields.  Kopano Intra-Varsity Cup is a bi-annual multi-sporting event where Bloemfontein and Welkom campus’ sports men and women interact in their playgrounds. The objective of the event is for students to unite and have interactive fun. The event was last held in Bloemfontein in 2014. This year, Welkom campus hosted the games.

The ladies’ soccer team got the first kick of the day and the game ended with two goals for Bloemfontein, scored by jersey 14- Mpho Sesedinyane and jersey 12-Mamokete Motsamai. Welkom was blessed with just one goal from jersey 10-Malefaso Rathebe, who also won the woman of the match award. The men soccer game was fast and furious with Jersey 10-Zukile Meza energised and hungry for goals. Both teams played well and Bloemfontein showered Welkom with 2-1. Bloemfontein won the best team awards with Zukile being Man of the Match and Thabang Molekane grabbing Best player of the day award.

The Welkom Netball team came tumbling like a ton of bricks on Bloemfontein team as they dominated the game from start to finish. Home ground advantage worked pretty well for them as they were well prepared for a win with their intimidating confidence. It was evident enough that the Bloemfontein team did not stand a chance. Their strength, speed, enthusiasm, and consistency paid off when they walloped Bloemfontein with 24-1 points. The Bloem team left the ground silently after the loss. All awards went to Welkom team, with Refilwe Mofokeng crowned the best player of the match.

Five Chess teams participated in a more silent and focused mind board game challenge. The environment was too quite you could hear a pin drop. The only sound was the electronic score sheet device that players clicked when they checkmate. Bloemfontein beat Welkom Campus 4- 0. In the slam-dunks, Bloemfontein basketball team was shot dunked by Welkom dunk masters in a very tight and challenging game and registered a 29- 23 victory against Bloemfontein. The official sponsors to the sports men and women were Nestle that sponsored 200 litres of bottled water and Red bull energy drink.
