The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), continues to strengthen its commitment to ethical leadership and institutional excellence through strategic investments in governance and leadership development. In partnership with The Ethics Institute (TEI), the university hosted an Ethics Workshop Session for its extended management team on 22 July 2026, reinforcing the central role of ethics in advancing responsible leadership, sound governance and sustainable institutional success.

The workshop formed part of CUT's ongoing efforts to cultivate a values-driven leadership culture capable of navigating the increasingly complex higher education landscape.

Rather than viewing ethics solely as a matter of compliance, the event positioned ethical leadership as a strategic capability that influences institutional performance, stakeholder confidence and organisational resilience. Participants explored key areas including Ethics Management, Governance of Ethics and Ethical Leadership, with discussions centred on integrating ethical considerations into leadership practice, policy implementation, risk management and institutional governance.

In today's higher education environment, universities are expected not only to produce graduates and conduct impactful research, but also to demonstrate accountability, transparency and responsible stewardship. Ethical governance has therefore become essential in ensuring that institutions remain credible, responsive and trusted by students, staff, industry partners, government and the broader public.

The workshop emphasised that ethical leadership begins with personal accountability but extends far beyond individual conduct. The engagement also highlighted the importance of ethics as a strategic enabler of good governance. Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Pamela Dube, emphasised that ethical leadership is fundamental to institutional sustainability. "When ethical principles inform institutional planning, resource allocation and decision-making, they contribute to stronger organisational effectiveness, improved stakeholder relationships and greater confidence in institutional leadership. This alignment between ethics and strategy is increasingly recognised as a cornerstone of sustainable institutional growth," said Prof. Dube.

Strong governance structures, supported by ethical leadership, enable institutions to manage risk effectively, strengthen organisational performance and build lasting public trust. For CUT, investing in leadership development is not only about enhancing managerial capability but also about strengthening the institutional culture that underpins its strategic ambitions. Developing leaders who are equipped to make principled decisions ensures that the university's values remain evident in its governance practices, operational processes and engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
