CUT launches UNITE to promote engagement
On 22 March 2017, CUT officially launched the new Unit for Transformation and Constructive Engagement (UNITE). This unit derives its existence from CUT’s 2017 Theme- the Year of the Human Project; focusing on staff, students and stakeholders to promote engagement and enhance the human reconciliation drive at CUT.  The unit is founded on the principles of humanity, impartiality and independence with a mission of promoting and unfolding the national transformation agenda through dialogue.

In addressing the audience, Prof. Henk de Jager Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal said that the unit aims to be one of the university’s leading projects as it relates to the quest for peace and reconciliation within the higher education sphere. “This unit will expand the space for constructive engagements and foster integrity, professionalism and respect for diversity in all areas of its work and the theme is indeed embracing diversity.” “I am dreaming of vibrancy on CUT campuses where there is a frequent constructive engagement between students, staff, alumni, and CUT community to collectively promote transformation at CUT. We need each other as CUT community successful,” he concluded. CUT is already taking a lead in debates on conflict resolution and decolonial education. These debates will be followed by national topical issues such as gender issues and violence against women; making CUT effectively engaged university that is focusing on socio-economic development issues in the region.

The launch was followed by the Lloyd Cele Show, an award-winning South African singer, songwriter and performer who, not only serenaded the students with his beautiful voice, but also shared his journey which resonated with the aspirations of many students who have a sense of hope and dream of a bright future for their families and country. His message was about embracing South Africa’s diverse culture, non-racialism and human dignity for all South Africans regardless of their colour, creed and background.
