CUT joins the DHET Budget Vote Debate 2018 in Parliament

The Chairperson of Council, Cllr Boysie Phehlukwayo and Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Henk de Jager represented the university during the Budget Vote Debate 2018 of the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor on 17 May 2018 in Parliament.

“CUT Council and Management regard the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) as an important partner. We have worked very hard during the past two years to enhance the relationship between DHET and Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT). The entire CUT Community is grateful for the continuous support from the DHET, which include additional allocations for student residences, maintenance grants for infrastructure, and revised subsidy allocations, received earlier this year,” said Prof. de Jager.

Early this year CUT received an additional allocation of R 100 million for student residence.  This is a huge investment by SA’s government given the dire financial circumstances universities find themselves in with the increasing costs of higher education.

In 2013, about R131 million was set aside for the construction of residences at Bloemfontein and Welkom Campuses to offer students superb educational and social experiences. These two projects are important to the university, as they offer a unique residential experience to the current students and appeal to both prospective students from the central and SADC regions.

“Certainly, these developments will allow us to meet the current demands, as we still need more residential space for our students on our two campuses”, Prof. de Jager concluded.
