CUT hosts Eskom Expo as Young Scientists Showcase Innovation and Creativity
Young innovators from schools across the Free State who showcased their innovative research and problem-solving skills at the 51st Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair, presenting a diverse range of projects aimed at addressing real-world challenges through science, technology, engineering, and innovation.
Curiosity, creativity and a passion for solving real-world challenges took centre stage at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), as the university partnered with Eskom Expo for Young Scientists to host the 51st Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair. The event celebrated the remarkable potential of young innovators from across the Free State Province, providing them with a platform to showcase their innovation, research capabilities and innovation, exchange ideas and demonstrate how science can shape a better future. More than a competition, the Science Fair celebrated young creative minds while inspiring learners to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), helping to nurture the next generation of innovators, researchers and problem-solvers. Learners from 30 schools across the province participated in the competition.
The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing a culture of scientific curiosity, innovation and critical thinking among learners. By encouraging learners to identify challenges, conduct research and develop practical solutions, the Expo helps cultivate the next generation of scientists, engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs who will contribute to the country's future development.
In his welcoming address, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement, Prof. Samson Mashele, commended the learners for their determination, resilience and passion for science. "Every scientific breakthrough begins with a curious mind. Never stop asking questions, exploring new ideas and challenging the status quo, because that is where innovation begins," he said.
When highlighting the university's strategic vision, Prof. Mashele added, "our university’s Vision 2030 is driven by research, innovation and community engagement. We are committed to developing knowledge and solutions that transform lives and contribute to sustainable development."
Delivering the keynote address, Mr Bob Tladi from the Free State Department of Education described the Expo as a celebration of curiosity, creativity and innovation, highlighting the role that science fairs play in inspiring learners to think critically, solve complex problems and become active contributors to knowledge creation. He highlighted the growing importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in an increasingly technology-driven world, noting that initiatives such as the Eskom Expo equip young people with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the future. Mr Tladi also acknowledged the commitment of learners, teachers and parents whose hard work made the impressive projects on display possible.
The projects presented during the regional science fair reflected the ingenuity, curiosity and problem-solving abilities of learners from participating learners. Through careful research, experimentation and analysis, learners demonstrated their ability to apply scientific principles to real-world challenges while developing essential skills in critical thinking, communication, collaboration and innovation.
Beyond the competition, the Expo created an environment where learners could exchange ideas, learn from one another and engage with educators, judges and science enthusiasts. The experience not only celebrated their achievements but also inspired many to pursue further studies and careers in STEM fields.
The 51st Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair served as a powerful reminder that the future of innovation rests in the hands of young people who are prepared to question, discover and persevere. Through initiatives such as these, learners are empowered to become creators of knowledge, innovators and agents of change, equipped to develop solutions that can make a lasting difference in their communities and beyond.
