CUT employees from humble beginnings to greatness

In 2016, the Central University of Technology permanently appointed several employees who were previously contracted employees from labour brokers, or temporary contract employees at CUT. These permanent appointments were a result of constructive engagement between student leaders, unions and management, dating as far back as 2012.

The insourcing project opened the doors of possibility for cleaners and protection services officers who are now Supervisors or Sergeants. Mrs. Sophie Shuping, who has been a cleaner since the Technikon years, and Mr Sidumo Rikhotso, who started working for CUT under Private Security Company, are some of the beneficiaries of the insourcing project.

Mr Sidumo Rikhotso started working at CUT in 2013 as a Supervisor under a private security company. In December 2015, he was absorbed by the institution within the Protection Services Unit as an officer and, in 2018, was promoted to the Sergeant position at Welkom Campus. “I feel honoured for this wonderful opportunity. This whole experience has taught me that being a leader is not an easy journey as it comes with many challenges. Despite the obstacles, I can gladly say that I am enjoying myself and I am grateful to CUT for affording me this opportunity,” said Mr Rikhotso.

One of his goals is to become a senior assistant and empower others by training and upskilling them. “My advice to co-workers is to stay focused and work hard regardless of any challenges faced. Your time to shine will come.”

Mrs Sophie Shuping was appointed as a Supervisor: Cleaning Services at Welkom campus on 01 July 2020, after acting on and off the position for more than ten years.

“I am content about my growth and development within the university so far.  This has shown me that determination and dedication do pay off. CUT has been loyal to my family and me, and I should do the same until I retire. My journey has not been a walk in the park, but I feel blessed to be part of this family. CUT has not only granted me the opportunity to prosper but has also opened doors for my children to further their studies and have better lives. This university has supported and empowered me in so many ways. I will be attending a computer short-course, and I am excited about it. After this course, I plan to study further and advance in computer literacy. My advice to others is to keep their heads up and never give up, be patient in all they do and strive for success.”
