CUT Cycling Club takes part in 2022 Cycle Lab Maluti Double 90 in Clarens

The recently launched CUT Cycling Club took part in the 2022 Cycle Lab Maluti Double 90 in Clarens on 09 April 2022. The team consisted of 12 male members who have been practising as a team since March 2022.

The cyclists completed the Cycle Lab Maluti Double 90, which started and finished the President Square, Clarens. The route took teams from Clarens to Bethlehem to follow the R26 before turning right onto the undulating R714 towards Warden and Eenzaamheid. Thereafter, cyclists took a right turn onto the R57 towards Kestell before the last stretch on the R712, which included a tough hilly section through the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The route is generally undulating, with steep and challenging hills in the last 40 km.

Dr Gary Paul, CUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Resources and Operations and one of the team members, said that launching the club is a great way for the CUT community to get back to doing outdoor activities while improving their health. “We had a great time cycling the route as a team and although there were some tough areas, we are proud that we made it to the finish line and represented the university well. And as the club grows, I hope that next year we will have a women’s team and one for students joining us.”

The university is committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports development for students and staff. The cycling club is one of the sports codes intended to contribute to this initiative, while also serving as a launch pad for the country’s future sport stars.
