CUT and SAMWU commits to empower municipal employees

The Faculty of Management Sciences and The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) entered into a mutually beneficial partnership on 26 July 2018. The partnership is envisaged to facilitate personal and professional advancement of municipal employees in their respective fields.

Under this partnership CUT will offer postgraduate programmes to 35 municipal employees in possession of a Diploma in Human Resources Management. They will be enrolled for B Tech in Human Resources Management programme equivalent to NQF level 7.  They are expected to meet CUT’s direct admission requirements or have successfully completed CUT’s Recognition of Prior Learning (“RPL”) requirements, which will place them at an NQF level 6 status.

Prof. David Ngidi, Deputy Vice-chancellor: Teaching and Learning said that MoU’s are important, and he associates them with a marriage. He said that in a marriage there are two parties who commit to everything together until death. “I am excited about this union and hope it will bear fruits that will last a lifetime.”

Mr Pule Molalenyane, President: SAMWU said “we are entering into this partnership; knowing exactly what it constitutes. First, a marriage is a blessing from God and if we understand that as a foundation, then we must treat each other as equal partners and have mutual respect. We need to invest in education and I believe that through this partnership, we will be able to educate South Africa. It is through education that we can make future generations understand and appreciate the true significance of being South Africans. We are guided by Ubuntu and if we embrace it we can succeed.”

Mr Molalenyane said that the partnership will influence municipalities to invest in institutions of higher learning and ensure that they invest in municipalities, producing quality graduates that we will take service delivery to another level.
