CUT and Mangaung join hands to improve pedestrian safety

President Brand Street remains an ongoing challenge for the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) employees and students. It is one of the busiest streets in Mangaung and cuts across the CUT campuses where students frequently cross over to access other campus facilities. Although the street has traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing for speeding and traffic flow control, they do not serve the much-desired purpose of slowing down a speeding motorist, making the street unsafe to all pedestrians, especially our students and learners from surrounding schools; namely, Louis Botha and Dr Viljoen.

Discussions with the Mangaung Metro Municipality held over the years to come up with measures of ensuring student safety, as well as other pedestrians using the street, proved fruitful as the Metro has since erected speed bumps to slow down motorists to improve safe crossing in the area.

Asked how they feel about the newly erected speed bump, one of the pedestrians, Ms Tshiamo Soro from Bochabela said she is happy to see the new improvements, but her wish is to see more bumps being added towards the traffic lights as they will serve the desired purpose. Another road user, CUT BTech Marketing student said the bump is long overdue, but he’s happy about the progress.
