CUT Professor adamant to bring a spark in the field of Mathematical Statistics
“Many students believe that statistics is just maths, and because they are intimidated by the subject, they assume that it is not for them. Even though statistical concepts involve mathematical formulas and symbolic notation, the challenge is that many students struggle to connect theory and practice. Mathematics follows a rigid theorem and proof structure, whereas statistics is a discipline that deals with real-life data”, these were the words of Prof. Danri Delport, who believes that she can change students’ perception about mathematical statistics and help them overcome their fears and eventually excel in this critical field.
Danri embarked on her career as a Junior Lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, Built-Environment and Information Technology in 1998, and her dedication and hard work paid off when she was promoted to Associate Professor position in 2023. Her passion for statistics flourished when she pursued a BSc in Mathematical Statisticsat the University of the Free State in 1994. Although Danri is interested in conducting research on higher education, her true passion lies in teaching introductory statistics to undergraduate students.
She has always had an innate aptitude for numbers and has always preferred solving mathematical problems and applying it on other subjects like geography or history. “Unfortunately, many first-year students dread statistics and develop an aversion to it before attending even a single class,” she said.
Professor Delport added that she feels content when students come to her at the end of the year to share their experiences on how much she has influenced their perception about statistics and how they have developed the love for the subject. “My mission of teaching statistics is to bring back the spark in the field of mathematical statistics and make it an enjoyable subject of choice, which is satisfying for me. As a teacher, my aim to make the lessons more engaging and exciting so that students can explore the subject's beauty by focusing on its real-life applications. I am determined to ensure that all my students not only grasp the concepts of statistics but also develop a genuine passion for the subject,” she added.
“When I reflect at my career and academic development here at CUT, my journey was not smooth. I faced moments of doubts but never lost confidence even when my articles received countless rejections. My strong sense of determination and passion for learning helped me to never give up on my goals, which was the driving force that propelled me to where I am.”
To excel in academia, Prof. Deport realised the importance of having a supportive social circle. Two individuals that she holds in high esteem are Prof. Swart from the Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering Department and Prof Truscott from the Mathematics Department, who have provided unwavering support throughout her journey. "They have been a constant source of motivation and believed in me even when I did not believe in myself. I am also fortunate to work in an environment that is caring and supportive and where colleagues look out for each other, motivate, and support one another," she said.
Danri strongly believes that the primary purpose of academia is to contribute towards improving the society. “As academics, we are privileged and responsible for creating knowledge that positively impacts the world around us. Whether through research, teaching, or community engagement, our actions should always strive to make a difference,” she concluded.
Apart from her academic pursuits, she likes to go for a long afternoon run and spend quality time with her twin sister, Mardi, who also works at the university. The twins share a close bond, often confusing their students with their striking similarities!
