Unveiling the CUT Research Strategic Plan 2026–2030 for Innovation and Impact
The Research Strategic Plan 2026–2030 provides a comprehensive framework to guide the development, growth, and impact of research within the institution over the strategic planning period. It outlines our institutional vision for research excellence, innovation, and societal impact, while simultaneously strengthening postgraduate education, research capacity, and knowledge production.
Ultimately, this strategy supports CUT’s broader mandate of contributing to socio-economic development through high-quality, relevant, and impactful research. See CUT Strategic Plan 2026 - 2030.
A Collaborative Development Process
To ensure extensive stakeholder participation, the research strategic planning process followed a highly structured approach. This journey started with campus-wide consultations, progressed through deliberations at relevant institutional structures, and culminated in formal approval by the Senate.
Four Core Research Focus Areas
The strategy is informed and anchored by four distinct research focus areas designed to address critical challenges:
- Innovation and technologies for sustainable futures
- Health, well-being, and quality of life
- Inclusive socio-economic and entrepreneurship development
- Human-centred transformation and societal impact
Six Strategic Objectives for Excellence
These research focus areas are supported by six key strategic objectives that work together to drive research productivity and maximise impact:
- Capacity Building
- Funding and Resource Mobilisation
- Strengthening Research Structure and Infrastructure
- Collaboration and Partnerships
- Increasing Research Outputs
- Enhancing Postgraduate Quality
Driving Meaningful Impact
The alignment of our research focus areas with these strategic objectives provides a coherent foundation for achieving the institution’s research impact statement. This ensures that our knowledge generation is purposeful, coordinated, and directed toward meaningful societal, economic, and environmental outcomes.
Faculty-Level Implementation
The achievement of these strategic objectives will be anchored at the faculty level. We will utilise differentiated implementation approaches that reflect variations in research maturity, staff capacity, and disciplinary focus areas. This targeted strategy ensures that institutional targets are translated into achievable, contextually appropriate, and faculty-specific outputs.
