Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health are equipped to protect public health and the environment by identifying, evaluating, and controlling environmental factors that can potentially affect human health. This versatile qualification opens doors to diverse sectors:

  • Public Sector & Government: Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) within local municipalities, as well as national and provincial government departments such as Health, Employment and Labour, Water and Sanitation, and Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
  • Private Sector & Industry: Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Officers, Environmental Compliance Officers, or Quality Assurance Managers in mining groups, utility companies (e.g., Eskom, Transnet, water boards), large food manufacturers, retailers, and abattoirs.
  • Consulting & Private Practice: Independent Environmental Health Consultants rendering professional services to industries, abattoirs, agricultural enterprises, and hospitality groups (e.g., hotels and large-scale catering).
  • Specialised Roles: Veterinary Health Officers (employed by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development), Food Safety Auditors, and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Specialists.

Minimum Qualification

A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with endorsement for a Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent qualification.

Required Subjects & Pass Levels

  • Life Sciences: Minimum 50% (Level 4)
  • Physical Sciences: Minimum 50% (Level 4)
  • Mathematics: Minimum 50% (Level 4)

Selection Process & Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP)

Selection Process

Candidates may be recommended for, and must successfully complete, a formal selection process for admission to this learning programme.

Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) Option

Meritorious exceptions may be considered for the ECP stream. A prospective student may be considered if they meet one of the following:

  • You achieved one level below the required mark in only one prerequisite subject (e.g., 40% instead of 50% in Life Sciences).
  • OR you meet all subject requirements but achieved one level below the required APS (M-score).

* Note: Students in the ECP may not change to the regular programme and must complete the ECP in full.
