Professor Mogomme Masoga

Professor Mogomme Alpheus Masoga is a distinguished scholar, acclaimed researcher, and seasoned academic leader who recently assumed the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), effective 1 August 2026.

With a career spanning decades of senior academic leadership, research management, and national policy development, Prof. Masoga brings a wealth of expertise to CUT. His appointment marks a pivotal moment for the University as it advances its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, focusing on strengthening a student-centred academic ecosystem, enhancing student success, and positioning CUT as a future-focused, innovation-driven University of Technology.

Prof. Masoga’s academic journey is marked by a deep commitment to higher education and continuous learning. His qualifications include:

Before joining CUT, Prof. Masoga spent the last decade in prominent senior leadership roles across South Africa’s higher education landscape. His extensive management and academic experience includes serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Free State (UFS), and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU). He has also held the position of Research Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo (UL) and within the School of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Venda (UNIVEN). Until recently, he served as the President of the South African Deans Association (SAHUDA).

Research and Scholarly Impact

Prof. Masoga is a National Research Foundation (NRF)-rated researcher with a coherent and extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals and academic book chapters. His core research trajectories focus on Oral History, Africanism, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS).

His key research and scholarly milestones include managing the NRF’s Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Education Research portfolios, serving as Research Manager for IKS, and leading the School of Historical Sciences at the former University of the North, where he also founded the African Renaissance Centre. Additionally, he directed the Research Department of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) and served as Acting Academic Journal Editor at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). He is the book editor for the AOSIS publication series, Knowledge Pathing: Multi-, Inter-, and Trans-Disciplining in Social Sciences, and currently serves as the editor for several academic journals. He has also supervised numerous postgraduate students and acted as an external examiner across various institutions.

Beyond his institutional roles, Prof. Masoga is a highly influential figure in national higher education policy, research strategy, and transformation. He currently serves as the Chairperson for three prominent bodies: the Steering Committee of the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR), the Board of the National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS), and the South African BRICS Think Tank. His expertise is also heavily leveraged in national quality assurance and internationalisation initiatives. He is an active member of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) Quality Assurance Framework Community of Practice for the Higher Education Practices Standard (HEPS) Curriculum Transformation, and contributes to the CHE reference group tasked with developing a comprehensive framework and monitoring system for higher education transformation in South Africa. Furthermore, he serves on the panel reference group for the Policy Framework for the Internationalisation of Higher Education in South Africa.
