Professor Mogomme Alpheus Masoga
Professor Masoga assumed this role effective 1 August 2026. His appointment marks a pivotal moment for the university as it advances its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, focusing on strengthening a student-centred academic ecosystem, enhancing student success, and positioning CUT as a future-focused, innovation-driven University of Technology.
Professional Journey and National Influence
Academic Leadership
With a career spanning decades of senior academic leadership, research management, and national policy development, Professor Masoga brings a wealth of expertise to CUT. Before joining the university, he spent the last decade in prominent roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Free State (UFS), Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), and Research Professor at the University of Limpopo (UL) and University of Venda (UNIVEN). Until recently, he served as the President of the South African Deans Association (SAHUDA).
National Policy and Governance
Professor Masoga is a highly influential figure in national higher education policy. He currently chairs the Steering Committee of the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR), the Board of the National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS), and the South African BRICS Think Tank. He is also an active member of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) Quality Assurance Framework Community of Practice and contributes to national frameworks for higher education transformation and internationalisation.

Research and Scholarly Impact
Professor Masoga is a National Research Foundation (NRF)-rated researcher with a coherent and extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals and academic book chapters. His core research trajectories focus on Oral History, Africanism, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS).
His key milestones include managing the NRF’s IKS and Education Research portfolios, founding the African Renaissance Centre at the former University of the North, and directing the Research Department of the CRL Rights Commission. He is the book editor for the AOSIS publication series, Knowledge Pathing: Multi-, Inter-, and Trans-Disciplining in Social Sciences, serves as an editor for several academic journals, and has supervised numerous postgraduate students while acting as an external examiner across various institutions.
