Navigating the transition to the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF).
A few years ago, the South African Government introduced a single, unified national qualification framework for education. This change, known as the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF), applies to all higher education institutions. Its primary goal is to improve the ability of students to move easily and effectively from one qualification to the next, as well as between institutions, while aligning South African degrees with international standards.
Why Has the System Changed?
The shift was necessary to ensure that South African qualifications are globally comparable and easily understood by international employers and universities. Under the old system, qualifications like the "National Diploma" and "Baccalaureus Technologiae (BTech)" were unique to South Africa's technikon system. The new framework replaces these with internationally recognised titles like "Bachelor's Degree," "Honours," and "Master's," creating a clearer, more standardised academic pathway for all graduates.
Mapping Your Academic Journey
CUT has fully adapted its curriculum to align with these national changes. Below is a guide to understanding how the old qualifications map to the new ones, and how you can plan your continued studies.
The Previous Framework
- National Diploma (NDip)
- Baccalaureus Technologiae (BTech)
- Master's Technologiae (MTech)
- Doctor Technologiae (DTech)
These qualifications were phased out as new programmes were accredited under the new framework.
The New HEQSF Framework
- Higher Certificate
- Diploma / Bachelor's Degree (3 or 4 years)
- Postgraduate Diploma / Honours Degree
- Master's Degree
- Doctoral Degree (PhD)
This is the current, internationally aligned standard.

Planning Your Continued Studies
We understand that these changes can create uncertainty, particularly for our alumni holding National Diplomas who wish to further their education. Please be assured that your qualifications remain valid and recognised. Here is how you can navigate your path forward:
If you hold a National Diploma
The BTech qualification is no longer offered as a new programme. However, this does not block your path to postgraduate study.
Your Path Forward: Most universities, including CUT, now offer Postgraduate Diplomas or Honours Degrees that serve as the equivalent progression route from a National Diploma. In some cases, you may need to complete specific bridging modules or meet certain admission requirements to ensure you are prepared for postgraduate-level work.
Contact the Enrolment Services for specific admission requirements →If you are a current student
CUT has fully transitioned its curriculum. You will graduate with a qualification that is aligned with the new HEQSF standards (e.g., Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Education, etc.).
This ensures that your degree is immediately recognisable and comparable to degrees offered by universities worldwide, enhancing your employability and mobility for further studies.
