PORTFOLIO | Dr Dewald Venter has a Bachelor's degree in human movement and recreation sciences, an Honors degree in recreation and tourism (North-West University,); a master's degree in Adventure Tourism Management (Tshwane University of Technology), and a PhD in Tourism Management (North-West University). He has 30 years of experience in the leisure industry. He is a registered South African national adventure, culture and nature tourist guide and is a CATHSSETA registered trainer and assessor for numerous tourism, sport, fitness and event management qualifications, skills programmes and unit standards. He participated in various rural tourism and adventure guide training initiatives, like the national government's Integrated Nature and Conservation (INTAC) Project in 2003 and soccer coaches (2008/2009) in the CATHSSETA-SAFA Soccer World Cup training programme. He served as chair of the South African Bureau of Standards Technical Committee 228: Tourism and Related Services from 2016 to 2019 and still serves as a member of the following ISO/SABS technical standards committees: TC 228: Tourism and related Services (and chaired from 2016-2019), TC 83: Sporting equipment, and TC 1090: Playparks and equipment standards. He is a founding member of the Southern African Adventure Industry Association and served as the interim CEO (2020/2021). |
AREAS OF EXPERTISE | His industry experience includes adventure-based learning, adventure tourism, tourist guiding, outdoor recreation, sport, human factors, standards, risk management and leadership development. Dr Venter's research focuses on leadership aspects of sustainable tourism development, practices and standards. In utilising Participatory Action Research (PAR), Dr Venter aims to engage whole communities in sustainable practices that support the natural environment and social and economic resources. |
