Professional Background

Prof. Michèle has extensive research and higher education experience, including three years as a Senior Agricultural Researcher at the Agricultural Research Council and 29 years in the higher education sector.

She has supervised or co-supervised two completed master's students, one doctoral student and one BTech (Honours) student, with research focused on medical product development using additive manufacturing.

Her research record includes 22 accredited journal articles, 14 conference proceedings, 11 book chapters, one book and 11 technical reports. She has also been rated as a Y- and L-category researcher by the National Research Foundation (NRF).

Her academic service includes serving as guest editor of a special edition of the Journal for New Generation Sciences, editor of RAPDASA conference proceedings and co-editor of three NCOH Occupational Disease series on Legionellosis. She has also reviewed work for the Rapid Prototyping Journal, the Journal for New Generation Sciences and NRF projects.

Her awards include the CSIR Research Award, the FRD Students Award for MSc, the S2A3 Bronze Medal for an outstanding MSc thesis, the JP van der Walt Prize for yeast research and the CUT Vice-Chancellor's Award for Best Researcher.

She was part of the team involved in the successful 2013 SARCHI application in medical product development awarded to CUT by the NRF. She also received NRF-NEP equipment funding for an Object Connex™ 350 additive manufacturing machine and was a co-applicant on a further NRF-NEP grant for a Hyrax Metal Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing Machine.
