In a landmark moment for the Central University of Technology, the Operational Sport Unit proudly hosted the inaugural CUT Sports Awards, a vibrant celebration of athletic achievement, dedication, and the spirit that defines CUT student-athletes. From athletics and cheerleading to volleyball, soccer, and e-sport, the awards honoured individuals and teams who embody the university’s ‘Thinking Beyond’ ethos through discipline, teamwork, and excellence.
The 2025 sporting season has been one of remarkable success across disciplines, reinforcing CUT’s commitment to developing well-rounded graduates who excel academically and as leaders, competitors, and ambassadors of sport.
2025 Season Highlights
Volleyball Excellence
The CUT Volleyball Club continued its legacy of national dominance, securing 7th place at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championships in both 2024 and 2025, maintaining its position among South Africa’s Top 10 university teams. The club’s outstanding performance also earned them qualification for the prestigious Zone VI Club Championship, placing CUT among the volleyball elite of Southern Africa.
Rugby Triumph
In a historic home victory, the CUT Ixias defeated the University of Cape Town (UCT), the reigning national champions, in a thrilling match that energised the campus community. Competing in the Varsity Cup Rugby Competition, the Ixias delivered a stellar season, finishing in a commendable 2nd place among South Africa’s top rugby universities.
Football Achievements
The Men’s Football (soccer) Team qualified for the 2025 Varsity Football Competition, marking another milestone in CUT’s growing football legacy.
The CUT Ixias Ladies FC (U20) were crowned Provincial Champions of the Engen Knockout Tournament, showcasing exceptional talent and determination in women’s football.
Netball Success
The Netball Team secured qualification for the 2026 Varsity Netball Competition, a testament to their consistent performance and strategic growth.
Locally, they dominated the scene by winning the Mangaung League, reinforcing CUT’s presence as a netball powerhouse in the region.
Athletic dominance at USSA
At the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championships, CUT athletes shone brightly, claiming 1st place in both the All-Girls and Mixed-Gender (CoEd) categories, earning gold medals and national recognition for their precision, energy, and teamwork.
Cheerleading Glory
Representing CUT at the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) National Championships in Oudtshoorn, the Cheerleading Team delivered show-stopping performances, achieving:
- 1st Place – CoEd Level
- 2nd Place – All-Girls Level 5
- 2nd Place – Pom Doubles
