Additional Admission Requirements

The minimum admission requirement for the Advanced Diploma in Media Studies is a National Diploma in Language Practice or a Diploma in Language Practice and Media Studies at NQF level 6 or an equivalent thereof in related fields of study.

The following qualifications may also provide entry into the proposed advanced diploma:

  1. A Diploma in Communication/Journalism/Media Studies and pitched at NQF level 6 (360 credits).
  2. A Bachelor’s Degree in Communication/Journalism/Media Studies and pitched at NQF level 7 (360 credits).

A minimum of 60% must be obtained in the Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree (Media Studies/Communication/Journalism) for admission to the Advanced Diploma in Media Studies.

Prospective candidates will be subjected to a selection test. The best 30 candidates will be selected (the academic records of previous qualifications and the selection test results will be taken into consideration).

Career Opportunities

Advanced Diploma in Media Studies is an area of study which focuses on the use of new media in news and information production; and prepares individuals to function as new media journalists, managers, entrepreneurs, photographers and graphic designers.


The Advanced Diploma in Media Studies has the following purposes: This qualification providesentry-level vocational or professional preparation or specialisation for bachelor’s degree graduates or diplomats by offering an intensive, focused and applied specialisation which meets the requirements of a career in Media Studies.  For example, a B.A. Communication/Journalism/Media Studies graduate may register for an Advanced Diploma in Media Studies in order to become a Communication – or Media Practitioner.

 A student with a Diploma in Language Practice and Media Studies may register for the Advanced Diploma in Media Studies to enter a career in Media Studies.  This qualification is therefore particularly suitable for continuing professional development through the inculcation of a deep and systematic understanding of current thinking, practice, theory and methodology in Media Studies. This qualification is also designed to prepare students for postgraduate study in Media Studies through the deepening of their knowledge and understanding of mass media theories, methodologies and practices in the disciplines and fields of Media Studies, as well as the development of their ability to formulate, undertake and resolve more complex theoretical and practice-related problems and tasks through the selection and use of appropriate methods and techniques.
