ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Introduction

Prospective students need to note that two sets of criteria will be used for admission to the CUT due to the new admission requirements for a Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree Programme requiring a National Senior Certificate. Applicants who obtained their Senior Certificate in 2007 or earlier, will still be evaluated and admitted on the old entry requirements. Those applicants who sat for the National Senior Certificate in 2008 will be subdued to the new admission requirements. Both these requirements are stipulated in the paragraphs that follow.

Basic requirements applicable for candidates with the “Old Senior Certificate”

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS WHO MATRICULATED IN 2007 OR BEFORE

Certificate, Diploma, B. Degree:

  • A candidate for a University of Technology degree, diploma or certificate must be in possession of at least a School End Certificate (grade 12- certificate).
  • He / she should have obtained at least 27 or more points on the CUT scale of notation in the July, or subsequent examination in grade 12.
  • The CUT will also consider the following aspects:
    • There must be place available in the particular learning programme;
    • Candidates may be subject to selection in the case of learning programmes where this is a requirement.
  • Candidates not meeting this requirement may still qualify for admission after undergoing a test to determine their potential.
  • Candidates who obtained less than 20 points in the grade 12 examination will not be considered for admission.

Other

  • Subject requirements for certain courses as indicated by the different Faculties;
  • Screening programmes for certain courses.

Old CUT scale of notation

A value is allocated to the symbol obtained in a subject. To calculate the candidate's score: Add the values according to the symbols obtained in the examinations as specified above.

Requirements applicable for candidates with the “New National Senior Certificate”

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS WHO MATRICULATE IN 2008 AND ONWARDS
General requirements

  • A candidate for a University of Technology degree, diploma or certificate must be in possession of at least a National Senior Certificate (NSC)(grade 12-certificate). Qualifications such as the following are applicable: National Certificate, National Higher Certificate, National Diploma,Advanced Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree.
  • For English as Home Language or First Additional Language as well as Life Orientation, a pass mark according to the specific requirements as set in the applicable programme will be required.
  • A candidate for a degree, diploma or certificate must score at least 27 or more points on the CUT scoring scale in the Grade 12 examination in July,or a subsequent examination.
  • If a candidate meets the minimum subject requirements for a degree,diploma or certificate but scores less than 27 points, but 20 or more on the CUT scoring scale in the Grade 12 examination in July or a subsequent examination, the CUT will consider the following aspects:
    • There must be a place available in the particular learning programme.
    • Candidates may be subject to selection in the case of learning programmes where this is a requirement.
  • If an applicant fails to qualify for admission to the CUT in terms of these regulations, such an applicant may be subject to the testing of potential.

New CUT scoring scale

A value is allocated to the percentage obtained in a subject. To calculate the candidate's score: Add the values according to the percentages obtained in the examinations as specified above.

EXIT LEVELS

Students register for a certificate or diploma qualification and upon successful completion will be awarded the National Certificate, National Higher Certificate or National Diploma. Students awarded the three-year diploma qualification qualify to enrol for a fourth year of study to obtain the B. Tech. qualification in those courses in respect of which degrees are offered.
