Future Prospects and Facilities Development

The DoE140 Project

The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) is constantly striving to improve and upgrade its efficiency and physical standards.  In order to deliver high-quality appropriate science, engineering and technology (SET) academic programmes supported by applied research the CUT endeavours to promote access with success and to attract potentially successful students to become employable graduates.

The Department of Education (DoE), in strengthening the hands of its partners in education, contributed an amount of R140m to upgrade academic and support services buildings on the Bloemfontein and Welkom Campusses.  The CUT Council added another R25m to this project and a further R12m was made available by the Development Fund of the Welkom Campus.

Six projects were identified to be extended and / or upgraded:

·            The extension of the Bhp Billiton building;

·            A new wing for the Dirk Coetzee building housing office space, the dean’s office, lecture rooms and rooms for practical work for Emergency Medical Care (EMC);

·            A new building for the School of Teacher Training housing offices and laboratories;

·            A Student Academic Support Centre with 24 hour study and computer rooms;

·            A lecture room complex on the Welkom Campus;

·            An academic Support building housing 24 hour study and computer rooms as well as a Teacher Training building on the Welkom Campus.

Kwezi V3 was appointed last year as managing consultants and will take charge of the whole project.  Three consulting companies will be managing the construction of the buildings once the CUT, with their assistance, has appointed building contractors.

The whole project should be finished by 2010.

More information will be published in the next Gratia.
