The EMDP is an initiative by CUT aimed at empowering educators at historically disadvantaged primary schools in the fields of Science, Technology, English and Mathematics (STEM). This project was first piloted in partnership with the Free State Department of Education at three primary schools under Motheo District in 2012 for a period of two years. The pilot schools are Bainsvlei CS, Grassland IS and Kamohelo PS.
Telkom Foundation provided sponsorship to this project from 2012-2015. The schools were provided with essential resources such as laptops, photocopiers, projectors, projection screens and other relevant teaching and learning aids. Telkom Foundation also provided the schools with mobile computer laboratories aimed at equipping the schools with ICT knowledge and skills.

Six seasoned and passionate mentors were appointed to provide on-site support to the schools, teachers and learners on a daily basis. They assist the schools with improved methods of curriculum delivery, lesson planning and classroom management amongst other interventions. Quarterly workshops are also conducted on a variety of topics to further enhance the educators’ skills.
Following the successful implementation of the pilot phase of the project, three more primary schools were identified to participate in the 2014/15 round, namely Heide PS, Karabelo PS, Monyatsi PS and Kgotsofalo IFS.
