The mandate of the Academic Planning Unit is to direct, manage and integrate academic planning processes at institutional and faculty levels in alignment with Vision 2020 strategic imperatives in order to position the Central University of Technology, Free State as a leading institution for higher education. Academic Planning brings together the functions of Academic Planning generally, Institutional Research, Quality Enhancement, Data Management, Data Services and Data Liaison (HEMIS, etc.) and operates as a unit within the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic

Academic Planning in general functions to integrate staff, student, financial resources and infrastructure planning with CUT’s Enrolment Plan, contracted with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). It must ensure that its Program Qualification Matrix (PQM) remains totally aligned with the vision of the CUT, the higher education transformation agenda, as well as the socio-economic needs of the country.

Institutional Research (IR)

The Institutional Research office supports strategic planning, based on analysis of institutional and other data to support university planning, management, operation, evaluation and decision-making. This function involves regular surveys among staff and students in order to produce useful information about the institution so as to aid planning and point to areas where there is a need for action. In addition IR develops and maintains planning support models.

Quality Enhancement (QE)

Quality Enhancement develops review systems, in line with the Higher-Education Quality Committee (HEQC) directives, and carries them out in the form of Institutional, Academic Program and Support unit audits and reviews, which include peer evaluation.  These give rise to Quality improvement plans, the outcomes of which are monitored and updated where necessary.  Furthermore, the APU helps to ensure that quality improvement is entrenched within all academic work at CUT so as to continuously increase effectiveness and efficiency.

Data Management (DM)

The purpose of the Data Management section is to:

  • support operational and strategic management decision-making across the institution;
  • fulfil the University’s statutory reporting obligations; and
  • fulfil internal and external stakeholders’ information requirements, by providing high Quality, up-to-date, relevant and easily accessible information.
